Shooter Qualifications

OVR has created a unique shooting qualification. Nearly every course across the internet talks about a beginner or intermediate shooter as a prerequisite. But what does that mean? If someone says they are an advanced shooter, what does that tell people? Perhaps they’ve completed some form of a course? Maybe they were military or law enforcement? Does that mean they can shoot at 1000 yards or just be able to shoot 10 shots in 1 second in a 1 inch circle?

OVR is following suit with martial arts community. In nearly every martial art, there is some form of a belt system to signify skill level. If a martial artist is wearing a red belt, it means they had to pass a test consisting of very specific skills that were equal to every other red belt wearer that is repeatable across the spectrum.

OVR applies this same concept to shooting. Our system is divided into 9 overall levels:

  • White
  • Yellow
  • Orange
  • Green
  • Purple
  • Blue
  • Brown
  • Red
  • Black.

The system is further subdivided into:

  • Beginner (white, yellow, orange)
  • Intermediate (green, purple, blue)
  • Advanced (brown, red, black)

Each level builds from the previous one. As students progress, they are required to fire within a par time, shooting moving targets, or move while shooting. Some levels are pistol only while others are rifle and pistol transitioning and reloading.

BEGINNER

To become a white level shooter, members must pass a series of tests, starting with safety.

The first thing a member must be able to do is state the 4 golden rules of firearms safety.

After reciting the 4 golden rules, students are required to safely pick up the firearm, load it , and properly assume a low ready position.

The first thing a member must be able to do is state the 4 golden rules of firearms safety.

After reciting the 4 golden rules, students are required to safely pick up the firearm, load it , and properly assume a low ready position.

Once in the low ready position, members are required to execute 4 untimed  shooting drills to work strictly on weapons handling and marksmanship; then safely unload and return to the weapon.

Yellow level qualifications begin to incorporate a shooter's ability to fire multiple shots accurately within a given time frame, or par. The drills are essentially the same as a white level shooter, but by shooting within a par time, the ante is raised. Students begin all drills in the low ready position and execute the drills with accuracy and under a given time frame.

The orange level is the final level of a beginner. This level continues to build on previous skills. Students are required to fire on multiple targets in a given timeframe and the number of targets are increased while time to shoot is decreased. Students are required to fire on multiple targets in a given timeframe and the number of targets are increased while time to shoot is decreased. Orange level also includes innocent, or no shoot, targets that must be avoided. Finally, shooters begin to learn how to move safely in short steps left or right as if moving to cover, then shoot by turning to fire at the target.

INTERMEDIATE

Green is the first stage in becoming an intermediate shooter. It continues to build off the previous levels of shooting under par at multiple targets. At this level, shooters are introduced to using an overt holster, or holster on the side of the hip. Some of the drills will be very familiar as they were completed for the orange level qua

At this level, shooters are introduced to using an overt holster, or holster on the side of the hip. Some of the drills will be very familiar as they were completed for the orange level qualifications, the difference this time is adding in proper pistol draw from overt holster. Moving targets will also be introduced at this level.

Purple qualification introduces two new stages of shooting. First,

shooters work on strong hand only (SHO) and weak hand only (WHO) shooting followed by safely switching hands should something happen and one arm is incapacitated.

The second stage introduced is incorporating reloading. More advanced movements will be introduced and shooting around obstacles.

The final intermediate level is the blue level. At this level, shooters have proven skills of moving short distances safely with a pistol drawn as well as drawing from an overt holster while quickly and accurately getting rounds on target.

Now shooters are introduced to drawing their pistol from concealment. Shooters will also begin judgment shooting where some targets are threats and others are not and a split second decision must be made to shoot appropriately.

ADVANCED

By the time a shooter reaches the brown level, they are now starting to become an advanced shooter with a pistol. They have shown skills firing from low ready, overt and concealed holsters and moving then shooting. Brown level continues to build on these skills with the introduction of a rifle. They have shown skills firing from low ready, overt and concealed holsters and moving then shooting. Brown level continues to build on these skills with the introduction of a rifle. Shooters still perform pistol drills, but also work on shooting with a rifle and then transitioning to a pistol.

Up to this point, members have been reloading using both hands. Now, they must reload using only a strong or weak hand. Members will also do multiple reloads during a single drill.

Similar to previous levels, shooters will recognize many of drills; having completed them during earlier qualifications. This time the rifle and pistol transitions and reloads are added together.

Black level is the highest level of qualification at OVRwatch. To obtain this level, members have already shown proficiency in shooting a rifle and pistol as well as reloading and moving and shooting.

For the black level qualification, members must also be able to shoot from nearly any position as well as teaching skills and working  with another member as a team.

Because the black level qualifier is being tested on all of these skills, any failure on the team is also a failure for the shooter. Teams must be able to safely maneuver with and around each other with emphasis on safely moving.
